Special session could be sooner than later

  • Jul. 17th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Gov. Bill Richardson this morning said the upcoming special session could be as early as early August. That's a month sooner that what he had said even a few days ago.

The governor wants the session sooner to speed up cash and other relief for New Mexicans faced with high prices on just about everything this year.

At a news conference this morning, he also revealed more details on his plans.

The rebate for a person who makes up to $60,00 a year would be $150 plus $40 for each dependent.

A person who makes between $65,000 and $70,000 would get $100 plus $26 for each dependent.

Someone earning $70,000 or more would get $75 back plus $20 for each dependent.

The plan includes other goodies like a tax holiday for Christmas time, an increase in the Worker Families Tax Credit and an increase in the eligibility limits for child care assistance.

In addition, Richardson wants to expand a program that helps low income residents pay their energy bills. With a nice surplus in hand, the governor also plans to invest in road construction projects around the state that are part of the GRIP program. With an influx of new cash, the program will be 90 percent funded, he said.
